Teams often run Navisworks or ACC clash tests as soon as federated models exist — then drown in thousands of hits, many of which are tolerance noise, incomplete LOD, or unresolved design decisions masquerading as geometry conflicts. Design verification is the disciplined step that asks: Is the building designed correctly before we ask if the models intersect?
What design verification includes
Verification is a structured QA pass across disciplines — typically before the first formal clash cycle:
- Spatial alignment — Grids, levels, and core locations consistent across models.
- Design criteria — Ceiling heights, plenum depths, structural bays, and egress widths match the basis of design.
- System routing logic — Major duct, pipe, and conduit paths feasible in allocated zones.

- Sheet vs. model parity — Key plan dimensions match modeled extents.
Recommended coordination sequence
- Publish federated models with agreed origin and shared coordinates.
- Run design verification checklist (internal or third-party QC).

- Track issues to closure with owner, discipline, and target date.

Most “clashes” at early phases are false positives: insulation overlaps, generic placeholders, or linked models at wrong elevations. Verification catches these in hours; clash meetings spent on them burn trust and schedule. Tune tests by zone (shafts, corridors, equipment rooms first) and by discipline pair — architecture vs. structure before MEP density is finalized.
